SPEED TIMERS

Homepage

The SPEED TIMER is a portable and safe (12 volt) system.  Originally designed for UK dry-ski slopes, it has been used for track events and can be used for events where mechanical contact is not possible, eg horse events.

The time is displayed to 0.01 second and is the time between the closure of the start contact (mechanical or electronic) and the closure of the finish contact (electronic).  The reset button clears the display and sends a signal to the start gate.

The system consists of:-

Timer

Mechanical Start Gate

IR Optical Finish Gate

Telecommunications

Cables.

___

A Dual Slalom unit uses two start and finish gates and gives a more reliable race than marshals using flags to indicate when a racer passes the finish gate.  Penalty lights indicate when a skier starts before the previous one finishes.

START GATE

The picture shows the start gate (yellow with arm at shin level) and the start marshal speaking to the time marshal over the telecommunication system.

The IR optical finish gate can be used as a start gate in other sports.

FINISH GATE

The two units of the IR finish gate (yellow) aligned at the finish gate – the two red poles.  Straw bales are used as protection.

TIMER

The timer in use. The lights on each side of the time display indicate the state of the gates.  The two left buttons duplicate the gates (used for testing during set-up) and the right one resets the display and turns the light on at the start gate.

The timing marshal is wearing the headset of the telecommunication system and can be in touch with the finish marshal as well as the start marshal.
